The report on Sri Lanka’s (SL) war that was to be forwarded to the US Congress has been postponed indefinitely . According to sources in America , this postponement is engendered by the need to garner more information in connection with the report . However , some sources say ,this is the result of a successful ‘Diplomatic operation’  of SL. It is Israel which is being employed to execute this operation . Israel is playing a major role in the operation to soften the American pressure.
Use of Israel by the SL Govt. to ward off the pressures of America is not something new. According to knowledgeable sources , Israel helped SL to stave off the pressures brought to bear on SL by America to halt the war to protect  the civil population during the final phase of the war.
There existed a divergence  between the American political and the Defense Division  opinions regarding the SL war  because of Israel’s ability to exert pressure  over the American Defense division’s opinions , sources said. When the American political Division tried to stop the war in SL , the Defense Division of America followed a policy of assisting SL to fight the war yielding to the intervention  of Israel, it is argued.
The manner in which SL Govt. used America and Israel’s  war weapons and equipment for the war was disclosed by an International website as follows :
“ The real assets of the SLAF driving Eelam war 1V were the new Spy planes. Several Cessna  421 , Golden Eagle and two ‘Beechcraft’ super King crafts  were bought from the United States  for maritime and ground surveillance . Close ground surveillance was carried out by Israeli IAI searcher MK 11 and EMIT Blue Horizon 2 unmanned aerial vehicles …..”
SL decided to seek Israel’s assistance  somewhere in 2007. Even during that period,the SL Govt. apparently followed foreign policies which were favorable to anti -Israel States – Palestine and other Arab countries.
SL’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa was also the former President of the SL –Palestine friendship campaign. He had consistently voiced his concern over the Palestine issue. He had campaigned for the Palestinians from as far back as 1970 -1977 when he was the youngest  Parliamentary  member in the United Front Govt.
Even after his party  was installed in power in 1994, he did not abandon this stance in respect of Palestine . When his party decided  in the year 2000, to call back the Israel Embassy  which was closed down during the tenure of office of the former President R. Premadasa,  Mahinda Rajapaksa steadfastly raised objections to this at the Cabinet meeting. He also conducted a vigorous media campaign against this decision publicly. Yet , the Govt. went ahead and got down Israel again to SL as it needed assistance in regard to the war.
Many thought that after Mahinda Rajapaksa becoming President he would close down the Israel Embassy and send them packing. But that did not materialize.
In 2006, when the resolution in favour of Palestine was presented before the UN general assembly , SL walked out and abstained from voting . Many began questioning whether  President Rajapaksa changed his stance regarding Palestine ? Sources close to the President reported that this action was taken by the then Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera independently without consulting the President. Later , the President has accused Samaraweera for this. Mangala on the other hand had declared that he took this step because the country needed American assistance for the war. Subsequently , when Mangala was dismissed from his portfolio in 2007  , one of the reasons cited by Mahinda for the dismissal was his abstaining from voting and walking out when the Palestine resolution was taken up ,which had therefore damaged the image of the President  he has built with the Arab countries.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, since his becoming the President has been cultivating and maintaining cordial relations with Iran and the Arab countries..Hence,  his action of dispatching the Prime Minister to Israel in March 2008 sprung a surprise among all. Following the Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake’s meeting with the Israel P.M. Ehud Olmert , the latter’s office issued a communiqué which stated thus …. “Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told SL Prime Minister , do not give into terrorism because it will only bring destruction to your country . Terrorism must be fought , one must not capitulate to it  ……”.  Similarly,  the whole world  must be alerted and awakened against Iran’s nuclear power , the Israel Prime Minister has insisted.
It is evident , the SL Govt. while maintaining ties with Iran has obtained support of Israel. In the wake of  SL Prime Minister’s tour of Israel , the ‘Sunday Leader’ reported , as Iran’s intelligence service is training SL ‘s intelligence service , Israel has declined to supply arms to SL. This is a consequence of the fear Israel entertained that the information regarding its weapons could leak to Iran through SL , the report added.
It is clear however SL used Israel not only to purchase arms , but also to subdue the antagonism of the Obama administration towards the war.Even today , it is the view of some that SL is enlisting the assistance of Israel to ward off America’s attempts to level war   crime charges  SL . They also claim that SL ‘s ties with Israel currently , is stronger than those with Arab countries.
Foreign media have reported that expulsion of former SL Ambassador in Geneva, Dayan Jayatileke was at the instigation of Israel which had applied pressure on SL Govt. to dismiss him because he roundly condemned Israel’s attacks on the Gaza strip at the UN human rights Commission,  and was very critical of the Israel Army. The foreign media even went further to add  that Israel has strongly protested to the SL Govt. against Dayan’s speech .
The Govt. which earlier  removed  its  Foreign Minister from his Ministerial portfolio for walking out  and abstaining from voting in favour of  the resolution brought forth in favour of  Palestine, in order to continue its cordial and friendly relations with Palestine ,  now deemed it right to expel the SL Ambassador  who condemned Israel at the UN human rights Commission, in order for the Govt. to continue its friendly relations with Israel , thus demonstrating to the World , all what matters in its Diplomacy is sheer  expediency and nothing else.

Sri Lanka and Burma crack down freemedia at all levels.

Channel 4 News showed footage claimed to show Sri Lankan forces executing Tamils earlier this year. The images are “horrendous” and, if authentic, are a serious breach of international law.

The United Nations’s own expert called for an investigation into footage broadcast by this programme. But there are accusations that the organisation failed to speak out about alleged atrocities committed in the dying days of Sri Lanka’s war against the Tamil Tigers.

Philip Alston, who is the UN’s special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, explained whether he thought the pictures were authentic.

He said: “This videotape seems to have most of the characteristics of a genuine article and that in itself is sufficient to impose an obligation upon a government to undertake a sustained, effective, impartial investigation to ascertain the truth.

“I think the United Nations is in a difficult situation in the sense that it’s really a grouping of states and the government of Sri Lanka has been very effective in terms of garnering the support of a large number of states and that does seem to have made the UN rather reluctant to speak out on these issues.

“My own role is not that of a UN official. I am a so-called independent expert, appointed as a UN special rapporteur. I report to the UN human rights council.

“I am therefore able to say very clearly that these images are gravely disturbing, that they raise prima facie concerns about significant extra-judicial executions and a full-scale investigation should be undertaken.

Channel 4 News shows footage claimed to show Sri Lankan forces executing Tamils earlier this year. Jonathan Miller reports.

Just three months after the Sri Lankan government declared the country liberated from the Tamil Tigers, video footage has emerged apparently showing government troops summarily executing Tamils.

Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka, which obtained the material, said it was filmed in January – when the international media were prevented by the Sri Lankan government from covering the conflict zone. The images in Jonathan Miller’s report contain extremely disturbing images.

• Torrential rains in Vavuniya Friday burst temporary sewage pipes, destroyed make-shift shelters and trapped thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) interned in Menik Farm in Vavuniya causing many of them to undergo severe difficulties as rain waters filled with sewage matter, maggots and human excreta rose in tents
• The rain has caused the temporary toilet pits dug in the camps to overflow while some pits were completely damaged
• The roads have turned muddy and impassable affecting the food supply to the IDPs
• Efforts to clear water stagnation were underway, but even as I talk, there is a downpour
• The situation is astounding. It is becoming increasingly unbearable for the IDPs as the latrines are damaged and emitting stench. They are left to languish on soggy floors and are unable to sleep
• Sri Lanka’s Roman Catholic leaders called for the release of ethnic Tamils held in military-run displacement camps on Saturday, saying they are confined like prisoners behind barbed wire

 The countries and the leaders worried about Iran, Burma and even Sudan, have little or no concern over this situation. Main stream media except Aljazeera, do not worry much about the situation in Sri Lanka. We rarely see a situation report on CNN which boasted itself as a voice against oppression. This is the reality. Politics not Human Rights matter to the world. The Hype created by the election of President Obama slowly going away slowly. But Tamils and Human Rights Activitis still expect President Obama will ACT FIRMLY NOW for oppressed, helpless, hopeless people.

Today I bring a report that touched my heart said to be coming DIRECT from Vavunia, Sri Lanka. Can anyone imagine these are happening in 21st century, in this information rich world, while all voices are silenced? In an era where President Obama, and all world leaders still visit old Nazi camps and voice against Nazi concentration camps, can we imagine below things still happening in our era?
 
This report is about “Chettikulam camp” which consists 4 zones. Each zone has more than 20,000 – 25,000 civilians. Zone 1 is the oldest of These 4 zones. Zone 4 contains the people came on last days (after May 15th) of the battle. These zone 4 people are considered as hardcore Militant supporters or family members of them. Zone 1 is the best of all these zones (or hell) according to facilities available which is also below the least acceptable living standards. Ban ki moon like people visit this zone 1 and only after severe temporary face lift make ups of the camp.

Water facility is severely limited:

Water has to be collected for drinking or toilets or washing clothes from these wells and they have to use these wells to bath too. People cannot get required volume of water. People are always dehydrated.

Toilets are also not enough. People start to make queue from 4am. Waiting will go on beyond 9 / 10am. If people are in hurry they have to use bare land in front of all people and security personnel.

People eat spoiled meals and get diarrhea and typhoid:

People get meals as parcels. Breakfast come around 9 – 11am. Lunch arrives not before 4pm. Quality is very poor. Not only the quality, but due to the delay all most all of the time meals are spoiled. But people have no choice they have to eat it as there are no alternative meals. There are no special meals for infants and kids or elderly.

Prostitution for getting some money to buy food for their kids:

Sinhala business men bring goods in Lorries and sell in the camps but many people has no money to buy even for their kids. In order to buy some biscuits or some other thing to give to eat to their kids many young mothers who lost their husbands were persuaded for prostitution by security personnel for one hundred rupees. This prostitution for getting some money to buy food for their kids is very common and very much open to public awareness.

People are getting sick very often:

People are getting sick very often. Few doctors go to see the people as OPD patients. Even these doctors were under surveillance during their visit by Intelligence officers. The queue will be too long. Bribing is a common thing for the patients for authorizing transfers to hospital treatments. The most prevalent illnesses among these internment camp people are Chicken pox, Typhoid, Typhoid complication such as perforation, Pneumonia – mostly in children and elderly, Pneumonia complications such as even pyo thorax – most children die from pneumonia almost always had pyo thorax, and Malnutrition.

Children are dying in high numbers:

Before mid of May most of the deaths were among elderly people in these camps. But now even children are dying in high numbers.

Neonatal deaths and Maternal mortality are very much higher:

Vavuniya GH only receives daily 10 to 25 corpses from Internment camps. Among the deaths are neonates, infants, children and elderly people are most in number. We don’t know there are any other places they are sending dead bodies. Patients are transferred to other hospitals too. These rates of neonatal deaths and maternal mortality are very much higher than any other war torn countries in the world.

Camps for prisoners who are militants and who the army thinks as militants:

There are camps for prisoners who are militants and who the army things as militants. These camps are separated from others. Some camps are under ICRC visit schedules. Many are not allowed for ICRC visits. Even in the camps ICRC knows, there are hidden sections where prisoners kept secretly. These prisoners not known by ICRC.

Patients all over the wards:

In GH Vavuniya, there are patients all over the wards on the beds, under beds, between the beds, on corridors, on waiting halls, duty rooms, under the trees, etc. Patients will grab your legs when you go by the ways and beg you for food, money, dress etc.

Families separated between camps:

There are families separated between camps. Even children are separated from parents. There are no any mechanisms in practice to find the missing parents, kids or relatives and reunite them. ICRC was not allowed to enter or take any information from these camps.

No recorded data about the people residing in the camps available other than army:

There are no recorded data about the people residing in the camps available other than army. So people gone missing cannot be found whether they stayed in a particular camp. There were more than 335,000 people in Vanni. But now only 272, 000 were reached Vavuniya. No one knows anything about the rest.

NOTHING BUT – Nazi concentration camps:

These camps are not IDP camps or not even internment camps but they are equal to Nazi concentration camps. There are no gas chambers. But people are allowed to die naturally. Or if saying correctly the circumstances are purposefully created to hasten the death of the inmates.
